About this project

Learn a language by writing it,
not by recognising it

Tapping the right tile out of four teaches recognition. It is possible to finish a lesson, and a streak, without being able to produce a single word unprompted — and in Vietnamese, producing a word means getting its diacritics right.

Why the accents are not optional

The same syllable under each of the six tones

  • ma ghost ngang
  • mother sắc
  • but huyền
  • mả grave hỏi
  • code ngã
  • mạ rice seedling nặng

How it works

A card shows you the English meaning. You type the Vietnamese, with every tone mark and vowel form in place, and the answer is checked on the server against the exact spelling. Nothing is stripped or forgiven — if the tone is wrong, the word is wrong.

Cards are scheduled by spaced repetition. Answer correctly and the interval widens: one day, then six, then multiplied each time after. Miss one and it resets, comes back tomorrow, and returns again before the session ends.

When an answer is wrong, the app stores exactly what you typed. Over time that turns into a specific and slightly uncomfortable list: not "this word is hard", but "you drop the hỏi tone on two-syllable words".

Where it is now

The bank holds 100 Vietnamese expressions across 4 tags, shared by everyone. Your cards, ratings and review history are your own.
